Guest Post! VK Tritschler

Greetings from Downunder!

I was thrilled to be asked to guest post from Ashley Quinn, because there is nothing more exciting as an author than to interact with readers. So thank you Ashley!

For those who I haven’t met before my name is VK Tritschler. I am half Kiwi and half Canadian (my brother used to call us Kiwiadians when we were growing up) and now I reside in the beauty of South Australia. Surrounded by idyllic beaches it has given me plenty of inspiration in my writing, and I have loved recreating some of my favourite places in my books.

I write across several genres within the romance field, but I am terrible at plotting. A story might start as an idea for one direction and end up somewhere completely unexpected. That is what I enjoy the most when I write. The unexpected adventures along the way.

My latest story, Vital Impetus, is included in the Magic & Mischief Anthology, which was just released in July and plays on the idea of multi-verse travel. The story is about a girl who finds she can pass between worlds and has to discover how she can use her skills and reconnect with her ancestry to find out what it all means. I loved getting to show her emotional connections grow and develop through the story, and I am working on the next part of her journey at the moment.

Excerpt:

Jess didn’t want to fall asleep.

Sleep had become her enemy. A gateway to worlds unknown and creatures yet discovered. All the places she had visited as a child, how many were real and how many were her imagination? Or were they the same? As the torchlight dimmed, flickered and dissolved, she finally lost her fight.

Another element I enjoyed writing was Jess’s reconnection with her childhood friend Pete. When she last saw him as a child, he was scolded by her father. In the book, they reconnect as adults, and the sparks grow as they remember how close they were.

In all her years of vivid dreaming, she’d never seen another person. Places, buildings, landscapes, beaches, forests or entire cities, but always alone. She had danced on top of the pyramids, dangled her legs off the edge of a massive cliff, and held a solo protest in the middle of Times Square. But this time was different.

The person’s shape was one she knew by heart, for she had traced her finger along his every freckle, tucked a stray hair behind his ears, and casually linked arms for a stroll. Pete.

Her heart thudded wildly.

Pete chopped wood with his shirt tied around his waist, the rise and fall of the axe methodical. She studied him. No longer was he the child she remembered. His form filled out. Muscles taut across his chest. His face more angular and less easy-going. His hair had darkened from his boyish golden-blond to a darker shade. She knew it was him, in the same way, she recognized herself in the mirror every morning.

He paused mid-swing to turn in her direction. Their eyes met and her heart skipped.

Things she had forgotten slipped back into her mind. Laughing and swinging each other around in circles. Wrapping arms around each other and spinning endlessly down a random hallway until they collapsed in a heap. The way his blue eyes darkened when he concentrated, and the small spot of brown in his left eye that you’d only notice if you looked carefully. Places, events, and memories which started as a trickle, soon swamped her. She swayed and raised her hand to her mouth.

It was fun to bring both unique worlds and historical experiences into the story for this character. The freedom to create and write new worlds was exciting.
